Stenberg: Mythos Fails to Outperform Existing AI Code Analyzers
Daniel Stenberg, the revered creator of the curl software, has publicly dismissed the hype surrounding Anthropic's Mythos AI model. In a detailed analysis published today, Stenberg concluded the tool is not a revolutionary leap in code vulnerability detection.

"I see no evidence that this setup finds issues to any particular higher or more advanced degree than the other tools have done before Mythos," Stenberg stated. He described the intense buildup around the model as "primarily marketing."
Claims of Extraordinary Danger Unfounded
Anthropic had earlier withdrawn Mythos from public release, citing safety concerns that it could be too dangerous. Stenberg's analysis, however, suggests those fears were overstated.
"Maybe this model is a little bit better, but even if it is, it is not better to a degree that seems to make a significant dent in code analyzing," he wrote. His findings directly challenge the narrative that Mythos represented a paradigm shift in AI-powered cybersecurity tools.
Background: The Mythos Controversy
Anthropic, an AI safety startup, developed Mythos as a specialized model for source code analysis. The company announced in late 2024 that it would not release Mythos publicly, claiming internal tests showed it could exploit vulnerabilities in ways that risked widespread harm. The decision sparked debate about responsible AI disclosure.
Stenberg's assessment adds a contrarian voice. He analyzed Mythos's performance on the curl codebase—one of the most scrutinized open-source projects—and found no evidence of superior capability. The model identified some issues, but not more or deeper than rival tools like GitHub Copilot or traditional static analyzers.
What This Means for AI Code Analysis
Stenberg's critique does not dismiss the power of AI in coding security. On the contrary, he reiterated that modern AI models are collectively making a significant impact. "AI powered code analyzers are significantly better at finding security flaws and mistakes in source code than any traditional code analyzers did in the past," he stressed.
However, his analysis suggests that no single model has yet achieved monopoly on effectiveness. The market remains open to competition, and claims of unique breakthrough capability deserve careful scrutiny. Anyone with time and experimental spirit can now find security problems in code, Stenberg noted, calling the current landscape "high quality chaos."
For developers and security teams, the takeaway is clear: integrate AI analysis tools into workflows, but maintain skepticism of vendor marketing. The real value may lie in combining multiple tools rather than betting on one exclusive model.
